ASE T7 HVAC practice test

The T7 test covers heating and air conditioning on medium and heavy trucks: the same refrigeration fundamentals as A7 plus truck-scale details — long refrigerant lines, sleeper units, and engine-cooling interactions. Required for Master Truck status.

ASE does not publish a fixed passing percentage — scores are scaled. Around 65–70% correct is the commonly cited range; aim above 80% in practice so you walk in with margin. The certificate is issued once ASE verifies your required work experience.

What the T7 test covers

The official task list for T7 HVAC Systems (Medium-Heavy Truck) breaks down into these content areas — the practice bank above draws from all of them:

  • A/C system diagnosis — gauge readings, poor cooling, compressor and clutch
  • Refrigeration components — condenser, evaporator, expansion devices, driers
  • Heating and engine cooling — heater circuits, valves, blend doors
  • Operating systems and controls — blower circuits, sleeper/auxiliary HVAC
  • Refrigerant recovery, recycling, and handling

Frequently asked

How many questions are on the ASE T7 test?
The T7 test has 40 scored questions plus about 10 unscored research questions, with a 60-minute time limit.
Is T7 very different from A7?
The refrigeration fundamentals are identical; T7 adds truck-specific systems such as sleeper HVAC units, longer line runs, and heavy-duty heater/coolant plumbing.
Do I need an EPA credential to do A/C work?
Yes — EPA Section 609 certification is the separate legal requirement for buying refrigerant and servicing mobile A/C. T7 is the ASE competency credential; technicians typically hold both.
