How ASE certification works
ASE certification is the industry-standard credential for automotive technicians in the U.S. You register for tests, sit them at a proctored test center (or via remote proctoring where offered), and the certificate is issued once your hands-on work experience is verified — relevant training can substitute for part of it.
- Each test: $62, plus one $34 registration fee per order (2026 pricing)
- A-series tests: 40–50 scored questions plus ~10 unscored research questions
- Passing A1–A8 earns Master Automobile Technician status
- Certifications stay valid for 5 years, then a shorter recertification test renews them
The best preparation is the same for every test: work through diagnostic scenarios until the symptom-to-cause reasoning is automatic. That is what these practice banks drill.
Frequently asked
- How many questions are on an ASE test?
- A-series tests have 40–50 scored questions and T-series tests 40–55, plus about 10 unscored research questions each. Time limits run 60–90 minutes depending on the test.
- What score do I need to pass an ASE test?
- ASE does not publish a fixed passing percentage — scoring is scaled. Around 65–70% correct is the commonly cited range, so aim above 80% in practice for margin.
- How much does ASE certification cost?
- In 2026, each test costs $62 plus a single $34 registration fee per order. Taking all eight A-series tests in one order runs about $530.
- What is a Master Automobile Technician?
- Passing all eight tests A1 through A8 (plus meeting the experience requirement) earns ASE Master Automobile Technician status. A9 is optional and not required for Master.
- What is a Master Medium-Heavy Truck Technician?
- Passing T2 through T8 earns ASE Master Medium-Heavy Truck Technician status. T1 (Gasoline Engines) is optional and not required for Master Truck.
- Are these the official ASE questions?
- No. These are original practice questions written from the published task-list topics, with an explanation after every answer. The official exams are administered by ASE at test centers.
